The composer described [this symphony] as "a meditation on war, suffering and victory", though he had in mind not only the course of World War II. He had enlisted in World War I, his letters home showing how profoundly he was affected, while the death of a much-loved brother (Anstey, pictured above) in the same conflict brought on a grief from which he never wholly recovered.
